Fayetteville NC again dealing with 'driving while Black' issue


The Fayetteville Observer analyzed data that included hundreds of thousands of traffic stops and searches for a series of stories focusing on a controversy that caused an uproar in the community a decade ago.
The “driving while Black” issue, which deals with a racial disparity among the drivers who are stopped and searched by officers, has gotten attention again. Some in the community noticed that statistics that had improved have gotten worse in recent years.

Black families teaching their kids what to do if stopped by police


The Rev. Brian Thompson and his family were riding in his black Cadillac Escalade about eight years ago when a siren interrupted their Sunday afternoon drive.
Thompson, the pastor at Simon Temple AME Zion Church on Yadkin Road, had finished three church services that morning. The family had just stopped for ice cream and were headed down McPherson Church Road when the patrol car with two white police officers pulled him over.
The officers approached on each side of the SUV with their hands on their guns, Thompson said.
“I was looking back over my shoulder (in the mirror),” he said, “My children were scared. My wife was scared. I didn’t know what was going to happen at that point. ....

Fayetteville artist, educator Sonny Kelly confronts racial injustice

Prejudice, racism, violence, social injustice; these are topics steeped in emotion and identity, and conversations about them can be challenging.
Sonny Kelly is happy to accept that challenge.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Jan. 29, 2021 /PRNewswire/  Piedmont Advantage Credit Union announced today that its PACU Foundation donated $2,000 to each of three charities across the credit union s service areas of North Carolina. A total of $6,000 will help meet critical needs in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and other economic hardships.
The three organizations are:
Financial Pathways of the Piedmont in Winston-Salem. The Foundation s donation will increase the organization s capacity to offer financial literacy classes and free or low cost one-on-one financial counseling and coaching with certified financial counselors to residents of Forsyth County, who struggle with debt, job loss and low wages. ....
