Golden Hawks Blast Comets in District Semis

The first step to get to Wells Fargo Arena was checked off the list for the Mid-Prairie boys’ basketball team last night when they opened up the postseason with a 65-35 win over West Liberty in a class 2A district semifinal.  As heard on KCII, it was slow going for the Golden Hawks in the first six minutes with the Comets taking advantage of offensive rebounds and held a 9-5 lead. A pair of triples by Jackson Pennington and Alex Bean to close the quarter is all the Hawks needed for the floodgates to open. A three point barrage ensued in the second quarter with Mid-Prairie holding a 29-18 advantage at half and a 21-4 third quickly put the game to bed. Golden Hawks Close Regular Season Running Past Regals

Back in December the Mid-Prairie boys’ basketball team exorcised some demons by downing Iowa City Regina for the first time in 23 tries. On Saturday, the Golden Hawks started up a win streak of their own against the Regals by managing the regular season sweep with a 59-36 win on the road. As heard on KCII, Aidan Rath was on a mission for the Hawks by scoring the game’s first six points and had 10 at the break in just nine minutes of play. Mid-Prairie held a slight 9-6 lead after one and 23-17 at intermission. The offense picked up in the third with a 22-10 quarter that led to the 23-point victory. Rath finished with a team-high 16 points and 10 rebounds. Carter Harmsen scored 11 of his 15 points in the second half. Ashton Cook led the Regals (7-11) with 17 points. The Golden Hawks shot 46% from the floor and were plus-five in the turnover margin.
