KEYSER - “Welcome to the ceremony honoring the Four Chaplains,” Boyce Houser Post 41 commander Jim Shumaker said recently as the post held a members-only program remembering those four chaplains who sacrificed themselves to save some of their fellow passengers as the USS Dorchester was taken down by the Germans.
“Boyce Houser Post 41 has participated in the annual event since 2019,” Shumaker explained. “Our historians tell us that we used to conduct this ceremony earlier in our history, and now we are back on track to continue this tradition.”
The program was private this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. ....

Let us follow the Four Chaplains' example of unity, not uniformity

On Feb. 3, 1943, the U.S. Army Transport DORCHESTER was tragically sunk. Of the 902 young men on board, only 230 survived. Many of those survivors owe their lives to the courage and leadership exhibited by the heroic Four Chaplains, who, in sacrificing their own lives, created a unique legacy of brotherhood.
Since 1951, the Chapel of the Four Chaplains has spread the message of their interfaith cooperation and selfless sacrifice, each year touching the lives of thousands of people across this great country encapsulated in the motto: “Unity, Not Uniformity.” With COVID restrictions preventing large public gatherings at this time, please read on. ....

During the course of this “pandemic” and the self-inflicted crisis it has created, fewer words have received more of a workout than the word “hero.” Coming from a pre-9/11 generation, heroism has a certain meaning to me. This is what I think of when I think of heroism:
On Feb. 3, 1943, the U.S.A.T. Dorchester carrying 902 service men, merchant seamen and civilian workers was sunk in the cold Atlantic.
Through the pandemonium, according to those present, four Army chaplains brought hope in despair and light in darkness. Those chaplains were Lt. George L.
Fox, Methodist; Lt. Alexander D. Goode, Jewish; Lt. John P. Washington, Roman Catholic; and Lt. Clark V. Poling, Dutch Reformed. ....
