The fact that foreign aid as currently practised has failed to achieve its poverty reduction targets in Africa is clear from the data. Over 75% of the world’s poor live in Africa today. In 1970 the figure was 10%. Some forecasts suggest it could rise to 90% by 2030.
Africa is the only continent in the world where official aid inflow outstrips private capital inflow by a large margin. This is problematic since no country in the world has achieved substantial development based on reliance on aid. ....

The Global Development and Environmental Change (GDEC) research strand brings together physical geographers and human geographers to investigate the interactions between major social and environmental processes, such as urbanisation, economic development, political conflict, climate change, resource extraction, environmental degradation, deforestation, biodiversity loss and disease outbreaks.
Aims and purpose
Moving beyond the North/South divides, we seek to generate evidence to inform local, national and global efforts to advance peace, prosperity and social justice in an environmentally sustainable manner within the context of a rapidly changing climate. Adding to an already overwhelming global poverty crisis, the pandemic increased the need for humanitarian aid distribution. In December, the UN appealed for $35 billion to be allotted to the 160 million in need around the world. With limited resources, and some countries cutting assistance, it’s important that the very poorest receive funds first. But need is incredibly hard to assess and usually relies on a combination of survey data that’s only sporadically collected, along with a rather limited well of geospatial data.
