Buried in Supreme Court orders on Monday was a new appointment by the court of its eleventh-ever Marshal. Col.
Gail A. Curley was the high court’s choice for the role of chief security officer and more, as defined by federal law.
(a) The Supreme Court may appoint a marshal, who shall be subject to removal by the Court, and may fix his compensation.
(b) The marshal may, with the approval of the Chief Justice of the United States, appoint and fix the compensation of necessary assistants and other employees to attend the Court, and necessary custodial employees. ....

Theatre Review: 'Virtual Mock Trial' presented by Shakespeare Theatre Company

This is the 35th year the “Mock Trial” has been presented and, like last year, it is virtual. In keeping with the Shakespeare Theatre Company and the STC’s Bard Association, it is a delightful confluence of Shakespeare, lawyerly wit, and timely barbs focused on the news of the day. This year did not disappoint.
The arguments were made with brio and wit. The judges asked searching questions and kept the lawyers on their toes and it was seamlessly done. For once, everyone was glad that nobody followed Shakespeare’s dictum to “…kill all the lawyers.” Because they slayed! ....

The three oldest U.S. Supreme Court justices opted not to attend President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration Wednesday due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Justices Stephen Breyer, 82; Clarence Thomas, 72; and Samuel Alito, 70, all opted to skip the inauguration, according to Supreme Court spokesperson Kathleen Arberg. The other six justices were in attendance.
“Several of the Justices elected not to attend the inauguration ceremony in light of the public health risks posed by the COVID pandemic,” Arberg said. ....

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court s refusal to help Donald Trump change the result of the 2020 election should come as no surprise for the very reason the president hoped to win the case: The court is conservative.
That means the three justices who owe their seats on the nation s highest bench to Trump, as well as others nominated by Republican presidents, profess adherence to the Constitution and the precise text of federal statutes. They don t just make stuff up.
