Judges' Welfare, Boko Haram and Bar Exams

By Onikepo Braithwaite The Judge and his N10 million Loan Two weeks ago, I was talking to a friend of mine – a Judge, and I felt so embarrassed and ashamed of Nigeria. He told me that he had applied to the Bank where his salary is domiciled for a N10 million loan a few years ago, to complete the construction of a house on a piece of land which his father bequeathed to him, so that he could earn some extra income to augment his salary and give his children a decent education, and also not end up being homeless on his retirement. The Bank flatly turned him down and refused to grant the loan, because they said his salary was too paltry to support a N10 million loan.

Managing Lagos traffic is tough, we were attacked 45 times — Oduyoye, General Manager

Translate Managing Lagos traffic is tough, we were attacked 45 times Oduyoye, General Manager On By Bose Adelaja General Manager of Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, LASTMA, Olajide Oduyoye, in this interview, speaks on the traffic gridlock in Lagos and various challenges associated with traffic management. How have you been managing the traffic situation in Lagos? I was sworn in as the General Manager of LASTMA in 2019. Incidentally, the job of LASTMA is to ensure the free flow of traffic in Lagos State. It behooves the leader of the agency to ensure the free flow of traffic. This is achievable mainly because the state government ensures that LASTMA officers are paid hazard allowances. This goes a long way to convince the officers that government is interested in their welfare. The state government ensures that an insurance policy is in place to cater to the officers where applicable, especially when we record injuries or death.

Lateef Kayode Jakande: Your past and impact will speak for you

Advertisement I reckoned that today I am a medical practitioner who went through a lot to get graduated. I may not be successful with ownership of mansions and fleet of assorted vehicles but I feel fulfilled practicing (and freely impactful to a number in need) what I have learnt courtesy of a largely free education policy, funded by the public fund and recurrently fought to remain so by students’ generation before mine and by my generation, at a great cost for some of us though. I remember that as one of the sons of a mother of two sons, who lost her husband when I was barely two years to cancer in 1972, it would have been very difficult to get the education to become a medical doctor if not for the free education policies in existence when I was in school. Especially the mid-segment – secondary education.
