Punch Newspapers Sections Published 16 December 2020 On Tuesday, October 20, 2020, a very sad incident which will certainly last long in the minds of Nigerians occurred at the Lekki area of Lagos State. It was the incident of peaceful unarmed Nigerian protesters being shot at by the Nigerian Army. After the incident, the social media space was flooded with reactions from individuals within and outside Nigeria. Even the international community expressed shock seeing that such a barbaric action could be unleashed on citizens of a county, who weren’t found guilty of any crime. Sadly, the Nigerian government, allegedly responsible for this massacre through the Nigerian Army, has initially denied involvement in the shooting and killing.

Lekki shooting: Army refused summons, lawyer tells judicial panel

Advertisement The panel, which is set up to probe police brutality and other related matters, had summoned Bello and Godwin Umelo, general officer commanding, 81 division, Victoria Island, Lagos, to explain their roles in the incident that took place at the Lekki tollgate area on October 20, 2020. At the hearing on Saturday, the two army officers were absent, as their case was scheduled for hearing. Explaining the outcome on the service of the summons, Ogunsanya said Umelo, who is a military general, was served and accepted the summons on November 30, 2020 around 6:04pm, but that of Bello could not be delivered as nobody agreed to receive it on his behalf.
