Moses Osire has been a boater for about 33 years. He tells TOFARATI IGE about his boating experiences and proffers solutions on how the sector can be improved
What stirred your interest in boating?
I started boating as a part-time job. I was a child then. At that time, we used to live in Bonny Camp, Victoria Island (Lagos), where we had boat clubs. We were going there to assist the white people on weekends and we would get some money in return. It was then I started developing love for boating.

On Tuesday, October 20, 2020, a very sad incident which will certainly last long in the minds of Nigerians occurred at the Lekki area of Lagos State. It was the incident of peaceful unarmed Nigerian protesters being shot at by the Nigerian Army.
After the incident, the social media space was flooded with reactions from individuals within and outside Nigeria. Even the international community expressed shock seeing that such a barbaric action could be unleashed on citizens of a county, who weren’t found guilty of any crime.
Sadly, the Nigerian government, allegedly responsible for this massacre through the Nigerian Army, has initially denied involvement in the shooting and killing.

In difficult and trying times like these, such as we are presently experiencing in Nigeria, it becomes incumbent on patriots to ‘be extremely circumspect, even advisedly taciturn, in making public comments on trending burning issues.
This is to prevent further pouring petrol on an already blazing inferno. But, I am now forced to do this follow-up write-up after three earlier major outings on the #EndSARS protests by deprived, ignored, marginalised and repressed angry Nigerian youths.
This intervention is centred on what I call the “Lekki Toll Gate Massacre” that was watched live on TV, like a reality show. It was on Tuesday, October 20, 2020. I watched it live. The panel, which is set up to probe police brutality and other related matters, had summoned Bello and Godwin Umelo, general officer commanding, 81 division, Victoria Island, Lagos, to explain their roles in the incident that took place at the Lekki tollgate area on October 20, 2020.
At the hearing on Saturday, the two army officers were absent, as their case was scheduled for hearing.
Explaining the outcome on the service of the summons, Ogunsanya said Umelo, who is a military general, was served and accepted the summons on November 30, 2020 around 6:04pm, but that of Bello could not be delivered as nobody agreed to receive it on his behalf.
