In Nigeria, Palm Wine Celebrates the Human Experience

In 1952, Nigerian author Amos Tutuola published
The Palm-Wine Drinkard, a book based on Yoruba folktales. Now a canonical piece of African literature, the book has been translated into 12 languages.
Its initial reception internationally may have disclosed more about Western reviewers than the work itself.
The Observer, described it as “simply and carefully” written in “young English.”
In 1953,
The New York Times Book Reviewdescribed Tutuola as “a true primitive” whose world had “no connection at all with the European rational and Christian traditions.”
The New Yorker’s 1953 review stated that Tutuola was “being taken a great deal too seriously” and instructed U.S. writers not to imitate him, as “it would be fatal for a writer with a richer literary inheritance.” ....

Design: Mehrul Bari
At Night All Blood Is Black (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2020; transl. Anna Moschovakis), shortlisted for the 2021 International Booker Prize, is a slender, vivid, wildly-imagined novella on the lives fractured by colonisation and war, the second novel by the France-based Senegalese author David Diop. Less novella and more continuous prose-poem, the book loops and curls, with several refrains that delight and, in time, frighten. . I know, I understand, I shouldn t have done it. I, Alfa Ndiaye, son of the old, old man, I understand, I shouldn t have. God s truth, now I know , the story begins. Its narrator and you will hear his name often is a World War I-era Senegalese soldier, forced into a battle several times removed from his own reality. What occurs before the very first page of the story is the death of his childhood friend, Mademba ....

The Colour of 2020 by Alvaro Zinos-Amaro

Alvaro Zinos-Amaro (by Francesca Myman)
Our very strange year invited, among other things, mournful reflections on a past that felt abruptly truncated, and a number of non-fiction titles, though surely in production before the world’s temporary suspension, were eerily attuned to this backward gaze. Then again, SF/F/H have a tendency to steep themselves deeply in their own genre pasts and traditions, even as they often compost these into unexpected futures, so the apparent synchronicity may be illusory. At any rate, Jonathan R. Eller’s
Bradbury Beyond Apollo satisfyingly closed out a minutely researched and finely realized three-volume biography of Ray Bradbury. This concluding tome covers his life and work from the late 1960s through the end of his life in 2012. Collection ....
