May 21, 2021
Islamabad: Almost seventy percent of the water has flown out of Shisper Glacier Lake in Hunza with an average flow of 750,000 cubic feet, posing grave threats to the downstream localities in the area.
According to the Disaster Management Authority of Gilgit-Baltistan, the remaining water of the lake would be released within a week as the temperature is continuously increasing with each passing day.
As part of the contingent plan, the local administration has closed the Karakoram Highway at Hassanabad where the bridge connecting main roads is quite vulnerable to increasing water levels.
The climate change ministry informed that the state-of-the-art equipment installed by it with the help of non-government organizations showed signs of glacial lakes in the Shisper Glacier in 2019. ....

World's biggest iceberg breaks off from Antarctica, says ESA

The world s biggest iceberg larger than the Spanish island of Mallorca has formed after breaking off from Antarctica, according to the European Space Agency (ESA).
Satellite imagery shows the mass of ice is about 170 kilometres long and 25 kilometres wide.
The iceberg, named A-76 by scientists, is now floating in the Weddell Sea after breaking away from the Ronne Ice Shelf in northwest Antarctica.
It is 500 square kilometres larger than the previous record holder and was first noted by the British Antarctic Society.
The calving of the iceberg is not thought to have been a result of climate change. Scientists say periodic calving of large chunks of ice is part of a natural cycle. ....

The iceberg A-76 is seen after breaking from the Ronne Ice Shelf. In this image, it is compared to the Spanish island of Majorca, which is slightly smaller.
A massive slab of ice, nearly six times the size of New York City, has broken off of an ice shelf in Antarctica, creating what is now the largest iceberg in the world, scientists recently announced.
The iceberg, dubbed A-76, was spotted breaking away from the Ronne Ice Shelf in the Weddell Sea by a researcher with the British Antarctic Survey on May 13. The separation was confirmed by the U.S. National Ice Center (USNIC) using satellite images. ....

May 19, 2021
Islamabad: The government is closing monitoring the situation in Shisper Glacier where rise in temperature can again cause glacial lake outburst and pose danger to lives of thousands of people living in the nearby areas.
According to the details, the climate change ministry has approached the local authorities and directed them to keep vigil over the situation and provide real-time data to all the relevant government departments.
An official said “We are currently monitoring the data of at least 150 areas that are vulnerable to the climate change and may face flood-like situation due to rising temperature.” The data showed that the surge in Shisper Glacier is unpredictable and sporadic, making it all the more risky for the local people. ....
