Island Briefs Track meet volunteers BAR HARBOR The Mount Desert Island track team is still looking for volunteers looking to assist with its first three meets. MDI will be hosting meets April 24, May 1 and May 15. All three home meets are scheduled to begin at noon, though volunteers may be asked to arrive early for meet preparation and other responsibilities. Volunteers will be assigned tasks such as marking throws, resetting poles following jumping events, measuring distances and raking sandpits. Those who wish to help will be asked to wear masks in accordance with CDC and Maine Principals’ Association guidelines. Prospective volunteers may sign up to work all three meets or volunteer on an individual basis. Artist turns passion into blooming business BERNARD Nancy Diedricksen’s new creative business venture, Paint & Petal, budded from her passion for flowers and art. Through her creations, she seeks to bring meaning to each carefully curated bouquet and arrangement. “Being an artist and a painter really helps me because I have an eye for color. In the summertime, my paint becomes the flowers, my tools are flowers and vases; in the wintertime, I’m using actual oil paint,” she said. Formerly a waitress for over 40 years, Diedricksen reconsidered her profession in light of coronavirus concerns, saying, “There is no way I’m going to work inside a restaurant without windows open.” ....

Wisconsin State Farmer Wisconsin’s leading dairy advocacy group has chosen its first woman to lead the group. Dairy Business Association announced during its organization s annual meeting that Thorp dairy farmer Amy Penterman will serve as president. “I’m honored to serve in this role going forward,” Penterman said in a press release. “Dairy is the backbone of our state’s economy and rural communities, and I am passionate about keeping it strong now and for future generations.” Penterman, who is also a crop insurance agent, was first elected to the board of directors in 2017. She farms with her husband, Sander, at Dutch Dairy. She has been part of the farm since 2007, which milks 850 cows and farms 1,300 acres. ....
