Hunger strike at Hudson jail on hold as ICE detainees await meeting with officials, advocate says Updated Dec 30, 2020; More than two dozen U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees at Hudson County jail have paused a hunger strike that began Monday and are now seeking a sit-down with ICE officials, an advocate for the detainees said. Kathy O’Leary, the regional coordinator for Pax Christi, said the 28 immigrant detainees would resume their hunger strike if the demands they plan to present to the federal agency are not met within seven days. Those detainees want ICE to release them from the county jail in Kearny so that they can work and provide for their families, continue litigating their immigration cases, and protect themselves from the coronavirus, O’Leary said. While they seek the release of all ICE detainees, those with medical conditions or over the age of 55 are a priority, she said. ....
