Investigations by the tax authorities revealed that many resident Indians regularly visited online gambling websites that witnessed a traffic surge through the lockdown, especially in its initial phases when New Delhi enforced strict curbs to prevent the virus from spreading.
The investigating arm of the indirect tax department is probing some of the world’s largest online gaming and betting companies, registered in territories as diverse as Australia, Curaçao, Cyprus, Malta, the Philippines and Russia, for not paying Goods and Services Tax (GST) in India. ....
