Brookline Education Foundation hosts Celebrating Teachers event COURTESY OF BROOKLINE EDUCATION FOUNDATION The Brookline Education Foundation recently hosted its annual Celebrating Teachers event in person at the Florida Ruffin Ridley School’s multi-purpose room. The event, which usually invites all teachers and acknowledges those who recently received grants and awards, consisted of a few guests and the current Caverly Award winners, (Elizabeth) Betsy Davis, BHS French teacher and international student advisor, and Francesca Stark, Driscoll fifth grade teacher. Davis, who has been teaching in Brookline for 35 years, is known for her kindness, high standards and ability to get the most out of her students. Davis cares about all of her students and creates a sense of caring and community in her class. In addition to teaching French, Davis is the international student advisor and is often the first person new international students meet when they come to Brooklin ....
This 3,000-Year-Old Egyptian City Just Became the Most Important Archeological Discovery Since King Tut’s Tomb Bryan Hood Archeologists never know what they’ll find on a dig. Sometimes it might be a Paleolithic-era fossil. Other times, it might be an entire ancient city, which is what happened on a recent dig in Egypt. Named “The Rise of Aten,” the forgotten city was unearthed last fall beneath the sand of the western bank of Luxor, site of ancient Thebes, reports Smithsonian Magazine. The 3,000-year-old city is the largest ancient municipality discovered in the country and has already been referred to as the most important architectural find within the country’s borders since the discovery of King Tut’s tomb nearly 100 years ago. ....
Print La Jolla resident Faye Girsh has been advocating for right-to-die laws ever since the early 1980s, when she was working for the Southern California branch of the American Civil Liberties Union as a clinical and forensic psychologist. At the time, the ACLU was representing Elizabeth Bouvia, a then-26-year-old woman living with quadriplegia caused by cerebral palsy. She wanted to die and tried to refuse food and drink in the hospital; aid in dying was illegal at the time. Bouvia lost her initial case and a court order was issued allowing the hospital to forcibly feed her through a tube inserted into her nose and throat, according to the AMA Journal of Ethics, but she eventually won her appeal to reject feedings in 1986. ....
