Rise in contraband smuggling into Sri Lankan prisons

Colombo (News 1st); There was an increase in attempts to smuggle contraband into Sri Lankan prisons during the April festive season, said the Department of Prisons.
Prisons Spokesperson Chandana Ekanayake speaking to News 1st said strict legal action will be instituted against people who attempt to smuggle various items into prisons.
Drugs and mobile phones smuggled in by outsiders were discovered from prison cells at the Magazine Prison, Kalutara Prison, Welikada Prison – Women’s Ward as well as many holding centers including the Prison Hospital.
The Prisons Spokesperson Chandana Ekanayake said visitation for prisoners is strictly regulated and monitored by Prison Intelligence and Prison Officers. ....

Sri Lanka : Prison COVID-19 cluster exceeds 3000

Dec 19, Colombo: The number of COVID-19 infected from the prison cluster has exceeded 3,000, the authorities report.
Accordingly, the total number of infected persons is 3,372, out of which 114 infected persons are prison officers.
Among the infected are 389 male prisoners, 9 female prisoners, while 2,676 are male remand prisoners and 184 were female remand prisoners.
The highest number of infected inmates of 800 is reported from Welikada Prison while 796 are from the Magazine Prison, 658 from Mahara Prison and 381 from Colombo Remand Prison.
So far 73 Covid-19 infected prison officers and 1,772 infected inmates have completely recovered.

Health authorities cannot control spread of COVID anymore - PHI Association

The Sri Lanka Public Health Inspectors Association stated that the health authorities cannot control the spread of the coronavirus as required any more. Association Chairperson Upul Rohana stated that if people fail to act responsibly during the upcoming festive season, the spread of the virus could further increase.
Among the 688 COVID patients that were identified in the country yesterday (14), 200 patients were identified from the Colombo District. It also included 58 Welikada Magazine Prison inmates, 38 patients from Mattakkuliya and 17 persons from Avissawella.
From the Kalutara District, 117 patients were identified, 113 patients were identified from the Gampaha District, 55 patients were from the Mullaitivu District, 48 persons from the Galle District, 38 persons from the Nuwara Eliya and 2 patients from the Ampara District were identified. ....
