Turnout in the 2020 election surged to the highest level of any election in 120 years. Recently released census data shows just how broad the surge in turnout was across demographics: The new data confirms an uptick in voting rates among Americans young and old, male and female and of different racial backgrounds and education levels.
Unlike exit polls that are limited to voters, the census survey interviews both voters and nonvoters, providing a clear look at what percentage of different groups turned out to vote, and how that compared with previous elections. ....

Police union contracts hinder discipline in Illinois' biggest cities

America’s law enforcement system is at a crossroads.
During the course of the past year, cities around the country have been rocked by wave after wave of protests following police-involved shootings. Now that a Minneapolis jury has held former police officer Derek Chauvin responsible for the killing of George Floyd, the national conversation has again turned to police reforms.
It’s clear something must be done to address wrongs and reestablish trust between communities and law enforcement officers, while also protecting the reputations of the majority of officers who serve honorably every day.
A majority of Americans from both political parties support some reform. In fact, 95% of Americans from both sides of the aisle support changing management policies to hold officers more accountable for their actions. ....

Fact check: '133 million registered voters' argument uses flawed logic

Posts circulating on social media allege that “only 133 million registered voters voted” to falsely claim that the number of votes cast for Joe Biden is not mathematically possible. The calculation on which this claim is based on is misleading. The nationwide voter turnout is usually calculated using the eligible-voting population as a denominator, not the number of registered voters. Around 239,247,182 people were eligible to vote in 2020. While there is no available figure yet for nationwide registered voters for 2020, Reuters calculations found there were an estimated 206,557,583 registered voters as of the publication of this article.
