The Recording Academy and the body’s former president and CEO Deborah Dugan have reached an agreement over her departure following an arbitration process.
“The Recording Academy and Deborah Dugan have agreed to resolve their differences and to keep the terms of their agreement private,” read a short statement from both parties.
The agreement brings to an end a long drawn out and often acrimonious period for the Academy after Dugan’s employment was terminated March 2, 2020. She was dismissed after the Academy had placed her on administrative leave Jan. 16, 2020 just 10 days before the 62nd annual Grammy Awards ceremony amid allegations of workplace bullying. ....

Harvey Mason Jr named Recording Academy President & CEO
After more than a year without a permanent chief executive, the Recording Academy announced that interim President & CEO Harvey Mason Jr. has been named to the organization’s top two posts.
Mason has been in the position on an unpaid, interim basis since January 2020, when his predecessor Deborah Dugan acrimoniously parted ways with the organization after just 8 months on the job. He also served Chair of the Academy’s Board, a position he will relinquish now that he’s been tapped for the leadership post.
In a joint statement, search committee co-chairs John Burk and Leslie Ann Jones said: “We are delighted that Harvey will remain at the helm and continue to steer the organization through this pivotal time. As we journeyed deeper into our extensive search, it became clear that the best person for the job was Harvey. We are immensely impressed by the remarkable work he has done during his interim tenure and ....

Things to Do: Read Sonic Boom by Peter Ames Carlin

It’s hard to fathom today, but in the 1960s and 70s, many record companies weren’t run by corporate boards, faceless businessmen, and bean counters. There were charismatic leaders installed in positions of power, real “music men” who could catch a new band or one of their established acts at a club or concert hall, party with them until the wee hours, then show up at the office the next morning for a finance meeting and do it all again.
Larger-than-life execs with names known only to music heads and liner note readers included Ahmet Ertegun, Walter Yetnikoff, Jerry Wexler, Al Bell, Seymour Stein, David Geffen, Clive Davis, Jac Holzman, Joe Smith and Mo Ostin. ....
