On April 5, 2021, the US Supreme Court decided the long-running
and closely-watched case of Google v. Oracle, holding that it was a
fair use for Google to copy the declaring code from the
application program interface (API) of Oracle s Java SE
platform when implementing Java for Google s Android operating

Well, here s an odd one. Drone maker DJI has been accused of copyright infringement in the US. So far, so normal: Every tech company gets slapped with cases like this. But the apparently American company accusing China s DJI is, itself, from China: Autel Robotics USA is a branch of a firm based in Shenzhen. (Which, funnily enough, is also where DJI is based.)

Whenever we talk about things like retroactive copyright term extension, we frequently see comments from even the regular copyright system supporters among the readership here insisting that they, too, feel copyright is too long and extending it further makes little sense. In fact, it often seems difficult to find anyone willing to publicly support copyright term extension. and yet, it seems to keep happening. We were just discussing how Denmark had suddenly changed its position on copyright extension on the issue of neighboring rights, which are a particularly pernicious interpretation of copyright law. ....

You may recall the story from about four years ago of the RIAA getting a SWAT team to raid a popular DJ for making mixtapes. Of course, mixtapes are pretty common especially in (but not limited to) the hiphop world. Hell, remember Lily Allen was distributing her own mixtapes off of her own website, which she later claimed was controlled by EMI. Mixtapes tend to be considered a murky area of copyright law. In most cases, they do involve some level of infringement, mixed with some authorized works. They re often used to promote a new artist, by mixing his or her work with more established artists.
