Kino Stadium drive-thru vaccine site shortening operation hours due to heat


TUCSON (KVOA) - In response to Tucson s weather easing into summer temperatures, the COVID-19 drive-thru vaccination site will be adjusting its operations at Kino Stadium starting Wednesday.
With the 90-degree temperatures expected to regularly hit the Old Pueblo in the upcoming weeks, Pima County announced Tuesday that it will adjust its hours of operations for its drive-thru site from 7 a.m. to noon starting Saturday to help keep its visitors, staff and volunteers safe from the heat.
This facility, which is managed by Banner-University Medicine, will continue to operate from Monday through Saturday until it shuts down permanently on May 14. ....

Huckelberry said last week saw some easing of pressure in county hospitals, with a 15 percent drop in COVID patients and a total of 633 COVID patients in local hospital beds.
While the number of Intensive Care Unit beds in use had dropped by 6 percent, only 20 ICU beds, or 5 percent of total capacity, remained available as of Friday. A total of 216 COVID patients were in ICU beds (accounting for 60 percent of ICU beds). Nearly two-thirds of ventilators in use 63 percent were by COVID patients.
Pima County rolling out vaccinations
Today, the county will open a vaccine site at the Kino Sports Complex. Vaccine administration, operated by Banner University Medicine, will take place in a drive-thru at the parking lot to the south of the stadium. The site is expected to provide 1,600 vaccinations per day, according to the county. ....

More than 20,000 register for vaccines in two hours; all appointments full


Registration opened for priority groups in phase 1B of COVID-19 vaccine rollouts Thursday, but according to the Pima County Health Department, all available appointments aimed at the 75+ population at the two Banner-operated vaccination sites and Tucson Medical Center have been “accounted for through the registration process,” according to a press release from the health department.
More than 20,000 residents registered for appointments within the first two hours of the registration website’s opening, the release said.
The health department recognized this is “causing frustration” for those still trying to receive appointments through the county’s registration website, but said more appointments will be made available as it receives more allocated vaccine doses from the state. ....

With more than 7,600 new cases reported today, the number of Arizona’s confirmed novel coronavirus cases topped 442,000 as of Friday, Dec. 18, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services.
Pima County, which reported 1,449 new cases today, has seen 57,250 of the state’s 442,671 confirmed cases.
With 142 new deaths reported today, a total of 7,819 Arizonans had died after contracting COVID-19, including 875 deaths in Pima County, according to the Dec. 18 report.
The number of hospitalized COVID cases statewide continues to soar as the virus has begun to spread more rapidly, putting stress on Arizona’s hospitals and surpassing July peaks. ADHS reported that as of Dec. 17, 3,931 COVID patients were hospitalized in the state, setting a new record. The previous peak of 3,517 hospitalized COVID patients was set on July 13; that number hit a subsequent low of 468 on Sept. 27.  ....
