U.S. Farm Exports Forecast and Farmers Climate Change Solution
Friday Mar 5th, 2021
From the Ag Information Network, I’m Bob Larson with your Agribusiness Update.
Agricultural crime remains a serious problem in many parts of California, though reported crimes declined in some rural counties the past year.
Detectives say they’re not sure why the decline occurred, and farmers say they continue to be plagued by thefts, illegal dumping and other problems.
A new bill introduced would increase fines for illegal dumping.
Some crews that clear dump sites have been reduced due to pandemic concerns.
U.S. farm exports are forecast by the USDA to hit a record $157 billion this year, aided by a weaker dollar against many foreign currencies. ....

Supervisors approve funding for Reading the Range program

The county recently approved funding of a program that has proven beneficial in providing information on ways to improve grazing.
The Reading the Range program has helped increase the chance for success for Gila County ranchers, while improving the environment impacted by public grazing.
Ashley Hall with the Gila County Cooperative Extension Service and Lori Brown, chair of the Tonto Natural Resource Conservation District, asked the Gila County Board of Supervisors for $30,000 to support the Reading the Range program at its March 2 meeting.
One of Hall’s major programming efforts is in administering the federally funded Reading the Range monitoring program, which is in place on more than 1 million acres on the Tonto National Forest. ....

Cattlemen raise questions about wild and scenic river bill

PENDLETON — Eastern Oregon ranchers say they are wary of federal legislation that would add nearly 4,700 miles of wild and scenic rivers statewide, despite assurances the proposal will not affect existing private property or water rights.
U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, both Democrats from Oregon, introduced the River Democracy Act on Feb. 3, which calls for dramatically expanding wild and scenic river designations in all corners of the state to protect water quality, enhance outdoor recreation and mitigate wildfire risks.
Oregon currently has 2,173 miles of wild and scenic rivers. The River Democracy Act would roughly triple that number.
The bill also expands wild and scenic river corridors from one-quarter mile to one-half mile on both sides of the river. For 4,700 river miles, that amounts to slightly more than 3 million acres of protected land — an area about the size of Connecticut. ....
