RICHMOND â With all of the discussion about which statues should come down and go up around the commonwealth, Sen. David Suetterlein, R-Roanoke County, wants a statue of Booker T. Washington to go up in the Virginia State Capitol.
Suetterlein is asking the General Assembly to set up a commemorative commission to work toward putting a statue of Washington, one of the most influential Black leaders of his time, in the Old Senate Chamber in the Capitol.
âI really believe that Booker T. Washington needs to be honored at Capitol Square,â Suetterlein told the Senate Rules Committee on Friday. âHeâs a great American and a great Virginian, and Virginia doesnât get as much credit as we should for this great Virginian that did so much for this country.â

Virginia removed its statue of Robert E. Lee from the U.S. Capitol overnight, the latest move in the state s purge of Confederate iconography in a year of reckoning on racial injustice.
Each state gets two statues in the Statuary Hall collection. Since 1909 Virginia s statues have depicted George Washington and Lee. A state panel last week recommended to the General Assembly that Virginia replace its Lee statue with a statue of teenage civil rights heroine Barbara Johns. We should all be proud of this important step forward for our Commonwealth and our country,â Gov. Ralph Northam said in a statement Monday.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A state panel has recommended that a statue of civil rights hero Barbara Johns represent Virginia in the Statuary Hall collection at the U.S. Capitol instead of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee
The Commission For Historical Statues In The United States Capitol voted 6-1 Wednesday in favor of Johns over four other finalists, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported. The General Assembly still must sign off on the commission’s pick.
