According to a press release from Jan. 21, this decision is based on “the ongoing spike in COVID-19 cases in Los Angeles,” and uncertainty about vaccine availability. “Santa Monica College will remain remote-only for the Summer 2021 term, with the exception of a limited number of in-person lab/practicum tools to be made available for students training in workforce areas deemed essential by the State of California,” said Dr. Kathryn Jeffery, President of SMC, in the email sent out to students and faculty. ....

SMC Bond Refinance Saves Taxpayers $26.8 Million Jan. 23, 2021 at 5:00 am Savings to be Passed on to District Property Owners through Lower Tax Bills This past December 2020, the Santa Monica Community College District successfully refinanced a portion of its general obligation bonds, saving the community more than $26.8 million in interest costs that will be passed on to district property owners through lower tax bills. The District availed itself of the favorable interest rate environment and issued new bonds at a rate of 2.4% to refinance previously issued bonds, which carried interest rates between 4% and 5%. There was no prepayment penalty or extension of the repayment period on the bonds. ....
SMC To Remain Remote-Only For Summer 2021 SANTA MONICA- On Thursday, January 21, Santa Monica College (SMC) announced that they will remain remote-only for the Summer 2021 term, with the exception of some in-person labs. “Based on current LA County Public Health and Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) directives for higher education, the ongoing spike in COVID-19 cases in Los Angeles, and uncertainty around when the vaccine will be more widely available to the general population, Santa Monica College will remain remote-only for the Summer 2021 term,” Superintendent Kathryn E. Jeffery said in an official announcement. SMC will make a decision regarding the Fall 2021 semester within the next few weeks, as new factors and guidelines are expected to take effect. All major college events leading up to summer will be virtual, this includes the Spring 2021 Institutional Flex Day, VIP Welcome Week 2021, and Graduation 2021. ....
