Pinellas County approves funding agreements for variety of improvements


LARGO — Pinellas County commissioners gave unanimous approval Feb. 9 to three funding agreements, including one that improves the county’s shelter capacity, another which helps with the local fight against the opioid epidemic and a third to enhance the seawall at Philippe Park in Safety Harbor.
The approval of the MOU with the Pinellas County School Board provides funding of nearly $1.57 million to enhance and retrofit several schools, including Carwise Middle School, East Lake High School, Fairmount Park Elementary School, Gibbs High School, John Hopkins Middle School, McMullen Booth Elementary School, Palm Harbor Middle School, Palm Harbor University, Sanderlin Elementary School and Sexton Elementary School. ....

President Joe Biden began his administration with a barrage of executive orders designed to undo his predecessor’s most dangerous and harmful policies, including those relating to criminal justice reform. With the goal of advancing racial equity throughout federal policies and institutions, President Biden reinstated an Obama-era policy that prohibits the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) from entering into new and renewed contracts with private prison companies. Additionally, acting U.S. Attorney General Monty Wilkinson reinstated the DOJ policy that prosecutors should use individualized assessments when making charging and sentencing decisions instead of automatically prosecuting cases to obtain the lengthiest and harshest sentences possible. ....

Fourth Circuit State Attorney's Office receives cold case grant – The Florida Bar

The State Attorney’s Office for Florida’s Fourth Judicial Circuit was awarded a $470,000 U.S. Department of Justice grant to pursue justice in violent crime cold cases dating back decades.
The grant, provided by the department’s Bureau of Justice Assistance, primarily provides funding to support investigative activities and prosecution of violent crime cold cases where DNA from a suspect has been identified. An unsolved homicide is considered a cold case after going unsolved for three years.
“Family members never forget. And neither do we,” said State Attorney Melissa Nelson. “Cold cases are challenging to investigate and rewarding to solve. This funding will help us continue our search for truth and bring answers to their loved ones.” ....

CPD Awarded $700,000 Federal Grant For Crime Gun Intelligence Center

The Chattanooga Police Department’s pursuit of criminals who endanger community members with the illegal use and possession of firearms along with its progressive use of technology and partnerships has earned the department a $700,000 federal grant, said officials. 
Chattanooga Police Department Sergeant Josh May submitted the grant proposal to the Bureau of Justice Assistance resulting in Chattanooga becoming one of just 26 cities awarded the funding to replicate the ATF Governing Board’s CGIC best practices. 
Every day I’m talking with people who’ve been rattled by gun violence and wanting help,” said Sgt. May. “Not only people who’ve been shot, but the others who were narrowly missed and the kids who are hearing gunshots outside their homes while trying to sleep.”   ....
