Ely clarifies access for off-road vehicles

ATV Trails Task Force recommends changes Posted Keith Vandervort ELY – Several recommendations from the new ATV Trails and Ordinance Task Force for the city of Ely were approved by the city council here Tuesday night, giving the off-road vehicles more access to city streets. The task force was formed last month to review and update city rules pertaining to off-road vehicle operation on city streets and to bring the city rules in compliance with county and state laws. With a new recreational trailhead in the works on the west end of town, the task force’s main goal is to ensure that Ely is “ATV friendly while maintaining a high level of safety.”

New Emu Park restaurant expands before even opening

Premium Content Subscriber only Josh Mullineaux has hung up his mining industry hat for the very last time and is now moving ahead with opening his new Emu Park burger bar, a move that will let him spend more time with his family. He’s been working hard doing the prep work for the new Fortyseven 10 Burger Bar at Emu Park for months but when the opportunity to take over a bigger shopfront came up, he pounced on the chance. Mr Mullineaux got the name for the business from the town’s postcode - 4710. The old store was almost ready to go, but Mr Mullineaux knew he wanted to expand to a bigger location a couple of years down the track, so thought it best to take the leap now.

Visitor center could open this fall

Keith Vandervort ELY – Travelers entering Ely on Highway 169 this fall could be able to stop into a brand new visitor center in the shadow of a freshly-painted water tower emblazoned with the city’s new logo. Council members Tuesday authorized soliciting construction bids for the centerpiece of a multi-million-dollar redevelopment project for the city’s west end, and gave the go ahead for the water tower repainting project despite exorbitant cost estimates. As much as $3 million, in two separate state bonding allocations, aisallocated for what has been dubbed the “west end trailhead project.” The first phase, at $1.3 million, was completed last year and included infrastructure and road construction at the city’s west entrance.

Ely musician, Earl Bulinski, passes away

Keith Vandervort ELY – The local music scene is mourning the loss of Earl Bulinski this week. Word of his death, at age 72, swept over this community last weekend. Earl and his wife, Sharon, spent their winters in their home away from home on South Padre Island, Texas, and returned to their Pattison Street home in Ely every summer. In recent years, Bulinski played with Jef Cerniak and Andy Messerschmidt in the Tru Blu North Trio, and were regulars at various live music venues around the city as well as the Boundary Waters Blues Festival in Winton. The Electras were formed when brothers Bill (lead guitar, vocals) and Earl Bulinski (rhythm guitar) came together as a duo in 1962, soon after moving to Ely and enrolling at Ely Memorial High School.
