Your View | Chartered Infrastructure engineer, smart motorways, Hammersmith Bridge

24 May, 2021
Main Point
I urge all members to support the Chartered Infrastructure Engineer qualification in the coming ballot from the ICE. There are now many infrastructure engineers working in civil engineering who seek professional qualification.
We have three options:
To have nothing to do with them – in which case many will seek professional qualifications elsewhere, causing further splits in the engineering profession
To widen our current qualification to cover infrastructure engineers – which would dilute our present qualification and cause confusion as to what constitutes a Chartered Civil Engineer
To establish a new Chartered Infrastructure Engineer qualification within the ICE which will help unite the engineering profession while maintaining the distinctive character of Chartered Civil Engineers. ....

Trustees approve new engineer title - New Civil Engineer

15 Dec, 2020

At their October meeting, the Trustees recommended that changes are made to the Royal Charter and bylaws to introduce a protected title of Chartered Infrastructure Engineer. They agreed that these changes will be put to a Member ballot in 2021.
This decision follows years of discussion among the membership about the changing nature of engineering. It recognises that successful infrastructure projects need a broad range of professionals to ensure their effective delivery. Not all infrastructure professionals have formal civil engineering qualifications, and so cannot apply to be chartered civil engineers, even though many seek professional qualification and recognition. ....
