Karen Detlefsen has been named vice provost for education at the University of Pennsylvania, effective July 1. The announcement was made today by Provost Wendell Pritchett and Deputy Provost Beth Winkelstein.
Detlefsen is a professor of philosophy in the School of Arts & Sciences, with a secondary appointment in the Graduate School of Education. She is chair of the Committee on Undergraduate Education in the College of Arts and Sciences, founding director of Penn’s Project for Philosophy for the Young and an affiliated faculty member of the Alice Paul Center for Research on Gender, Sexuality and Women. John Keller, the University of Iowa’s associate provost for graduate and professional education and dean of the Graduate College, will step down as associate provost and dean on July 31.

Keller the longest-serving graduate dean in the Big Ten will continue to serve the university as a member of the faculty and as a leader on several projects already underway in Office of the Provost. Keller was named dean in 2002 after serving as the interim for two years. An internal search will be conducted for his replacement.
