Concerns Cloud Dems' Scramble To Salvage Raising Minimum Wage With Workaround

After the Senate parliamentarian dashed Democrats’ hopes of crowbarring a $15 federal minimum wage into the COVID-19 relief package Thursday night, members and their staffs have been scrambling to figure out a way around the ruling. 
Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Bernie Sanders (D-VT), who chair the Senate Finance and Budget Committees respectively, have proposed a backdoor approach that the parliamentarian might approve of, one that would involve changing tax policy.
Wyden put out a statement saying that his proposal would impose a 5 percent penalty on the payrolls of big corporations if workers earned less than a certain amount. He also called for a tax credit equal to up to 25 percent of wages for small businesses that pay their workers higher wages. Many of the specific numbers, however, have not yet been made public. ....

Biden Appoints Indian American Attorney Kiran Ahuja to Head Office of Personnel Management


NEW YORK – President Joe Biden has appointed Kiran Ahuja, a civil rights lawyer and an advocate for Asian Americans, to head the Office of Personnel Management.
Ahuja, whose nomination was announced Feb. 23 by the White House, is joining at least 20 other Indian Americans nominated by Biden to senior positions in his administration.
As a member of Biden s transition team, she was in charge of ensuring a smooth move by the agency to the new administration.
OPM oversees the federal government s civil service, coordinating the recruitment of government employees, and manages their health insurance and retirement benefits programs.
In former President Barack Obama s administration Ahuja had served in the OPM as chief of staff. ....

Senate committees postpone votes on Indian-American cabinet nominee

New York– Two Senate committees unexpectedly postponed on Wednesday preliminary votes on confirming Neera Tanden, the embattled Indian-American nominee for a cabinet position, as the powerful director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
With the votes uncertain for her confirmation by the full Senate after a key Democratic Party Senator Joe Manchin opposed her, the Homeland Security and Budget Committees delayed the preliminary votes on approving her nomination that were scheduled for Wednesday.
Democratic Senator Gary Peters, who heads the Homeland Security Committee, said the delay was because “people needed a little more time to assess it.” ....
