Weekend 'Marae Stay' organised to connect Hindu, Maori communities

Coming together of Hindu and Maori communities at Te Papaiouru Marae, Rotorua, at an earlier session of the Hindu Council of New Zealand. On the left is council secretary Dr Guna Magesan.
Magesan said in the past, since the early 2000s, the marae stays had been organised by the council, but this year it was being co-ordinated by the youth wing.
If you have never stayed at a marae, or would like to come and stay again, now is the perfect time, he said.
Magesan said all accommodation, food, and resources needed for the workshops would be included in the $20 fee per person. ....

Residents group uses £10,000 funding to come together and promote creativity during coronavirus pandemic


A SKIPTON social arts project has been bringing the community together during the coronavirus pandemic with help from the Health Lottery.
The Sunday Social project, run by The Greatwood and Horseclose Residents Association, received £10,000 from the People’s Health Trust, raised by Health Lottery Yorkshire and Humber, to provide weekly craft and social events for residents of all ages.
Those behind the project, including Skipton’s Mayor, Karen McIntyre, established a monthly weekend social cafe for residents of the estate which ran until the end of 2020, before widening its remit to deliver online events, reaching out to even more.
Sessions were intended to bring members of the community together, and establish new friendships, and were run by led by residents. This has all happened in a community which has been struck by economic difficulties, social isolation and mental health issues. ....

Barbershop winners from creative grants scheme


It was particularly special because it was the city’s 150th anniversary year, the Manawatunes 25th birthday, and the first time singers had been able to compete in a while after Covid-19 restrictions saw cancellation of last year’s convention.
The young singers will take the stage at the Regent on Broadway on September 22 and 23, followed by the adult competitions on September 24 and 25.
The champions will perform for the public on the Thursday and Saturday.
The singers will also venture out of the theatre, with “After-Glow” performances at venues around the city.
There would be a “Big Sing” in Te Marae o Hine/The Square at some stage. ....
