Irish children's reading skills improved during lockdown – report


Overall, the number of books read among children dropped compared with previous years, but the young people were reading more challenging books.
JK Rowling dominated the leaderboard of most popular books at primary level as pupils continued to pick up the Harry Potter series. Other popular authors at primary included David Walliams, Julia Donaldson and Roald Dahl.
At second level the most popular book was One of Us is Lying by Karen M McManus. Other popular authors at secondary school included Suzanne Collins, Rick Riordan and Philip Pulman.
Renaissance director John Moore said reading had helped many children’s sense of wellbeing while isolated from the wider world. ....

Oscar-nominated Cartoon Saloon are engaging with local gaelscoileanna in a creative initiative aimed at promoting a love of the Irish language.
Staff, students and artists working at Cartoon Saloon are involved in the collaborative Creative Clusters project in conjunction with the Arts, Heritage and Culture through the medium of Irish.
Students are working with Aine Ni Ghlinn Laureate na nOg, and a series of visual artists from Cartoon Saloon, to develop a shared body of work, as Gaeilge. ....

Minister Foley invites applications from schools for funding to work together on Creative Projects
 
The Minister for Education Norma Foley TD today invited primary and post-primary schools across Ireland to apply for Creative Clusters, an initiative taking place as part of Creative Ireland and under the Schools Excellence Fund. The Department of Education budget for Creative Clusters in 2021 is €595,000.
Under this scheme to support schools to build capacity in creativity, schools in each cluster will enjoy access to a specialist facilitator, artist or creative expertise in whatever their chosen area of interest or theme might be. These resources will help the schools to build a project of learning and activities tailor-made for their students. As part of this funding allocation, a cluster may receive up to €15,000 funding to help bring their plans and ideas to fruition in 2021-2023. ....
