What first appears as allergic dermatitis in horses is likely to be part of deeper-rooted problems linked to the body’s immune response.
“It is now recognized that atopic dermatitis is not a single disease but a multifaceted clinical syndrome with different pathways in various subgroups of patients,” Rosanna Marsella writes in the journal
Veterinary Sciences.
“Appreciating this complexity is clinically relevant as we develop more targeted treatments which may work well in some patients but not in others.” ....

New scale for tracking laminitis progression developed

A new scoring method has been shown to be useful for monitoring the progress of cases of endocrinopathic-laminitis.
Endocrinopathic-laminitis or hyperinsulinaemia-associated laminitis (HAL) is a common form of the condition, typically encountered in overweight animals.
Being able to grade the severity of the signs is useful, both for assessing the response to treatment in clinical situations, but also for assessing potential new treatments when they become available.
The 4-point Obel scale has been used for many years to describe the severity of laminitic signs. It was devised for use with severe cases caused by sepsis or starch overload, and may not be as well suited to cases of HAL, which often show a more gradual onset. ....

People of South Asian descent possess a set of genes inherited from Neanderthals that makes them more susceptible to hospitalization from COVID-19, according to a study published in
Nature.
While certain risk factors affect the severity of COVID-19 – such as age and presence of underlying health conditions – the study noted that many still contract a severe case of COVID-19 without these risk factors, implying the existence of other risk factors in our genetics. Hugo Zeberg and Svante Paabo, the study’s authors, found a core haplotype (a group of genes inherited from a single parent) that increases the risk of hospitalization for COVID-19 to occur at a 50 percent frequency in South Asian people. ....

A new owner-friendly horse scale to identify the easy keepers from the hard keepers has been developed by researchers at the University of Delaware.
Horses with different metabolic tendencies are anecdotally referred to as “easy” or “hard” keepers. Easy keepers tend to gain weight easily while hard keepers require extra feed to maintain condition. There is also a group sometimes referred to as medium keepers.
Both easy and hard keepers carry a managerial and financial burden which can be a dissuading factor for people shopping for a horse. For some owners, it may mean separating easy keepers from other horses to keep them on tighter rations, while hard keepers may require additional food rations. ....

In human medicine, HILT is successfully used in the rehabilitation of many orthopedic injuries and disorders. In equine veterinary medicine, it is a relatively new treatment.
