Anita Deli Sandwich moves in near Crystal Beer Parlor in Savannah

Opened in January, Anita Deli Sandwich is catty-corner from Crystal Beer Parlor and more than fills the space vacated by its predecessor.
Just before Thanksgiving 2020, Chef Patrick McNamara’s satellite shop Totally Baked pulled out of 348 Jefferson St. and returned to his Noble Fare home base. Anita Rentz had been one of McNamara’s employees at Totally Baked, and on Dec. 1, she and husband Robert became the location’s new co-owners and co-chefs.
“We had to start from scratch,” Anita Rentz recalled. “It was a shell.”
In a little more than a month, she and Robert designed and built out the restaurant themselves, turning a blank canvas into a fully functional and well-fitted deli. ....

Pandemic threatens to crack Savannah's Crystal Beer Parlor

More of a museum than a restaurant. More of a shrine than a business. The Crystal Beer Parlor at 301 W. Jones St. has been a Savannah staple for generations − since 1933, to be exact – and the interior serves as a community time capsule, its walls covered with old photographs of local and national heroes, some connected to the Crystal’s regular customers.
But the COVID-19 pandemic has hit this iconic Savannah eatery hard, and now it is in danger of closing its doors. In an appeal to the community to keep suds flowing here for generations to come, regular patron Don Teuton recently launched a GoFundMe page titled “Save The Crystal Beer Parlor!” with a goal of raising $150,000. By the afternoon of Monday, Dec. 14, just over $35,000 had been collected in the online fundraising effort. ....

Crystal Beer Parlor grateful for Savannah's support during pandemic

From ghosts, operating as an illegal speakeasy during Prohibition to visits from Al Capone, the legacy of Savannah’s Crystal Beer Parlor stretches far beyond its juicy burgers and creamy crab stew.
First opened in 1933 as The Crystal, the spot has closed and reopened at least twice during its lifetime, but has remained a favorite of both locals and visitors.
“We were a little concerned because of course, the country was in the middle of a recession. My hand was shaking with signing the lease agreement,” current owner John Nichols said of taking over in 2009.
“I kind of rationalized the whole thing by thinking that the place opened in the midst of the Great Depression, so here we go again. ....
