Fire is mesmerizing, mysterious. It’s alluring, comforting, deadly, ferocious. Since it was first harnessed by man (such as man was) a million years ago, fire has provided warmth and sustenance. It was used for cooking, for crafting tools and pottery and over the ensuing thousands of years it’s led to all manner of advancements in technology, manufacturing and touching our lives in thousands of ways.
At the same time it’s been a huge destructive force in destroying forests and buildings, causing unfathomable damage through war, arson, accidents and other forms of mayhem. Fire is, in short, is both essential and terrifying. We need it desperately, and we fear it mightily. ....

At the Long Beach Post, we have taken each challenge in stride, listening to the community in order to better serve you. Many of the projects and initiatives we announced this year were already months in the making, while other actions were born out of the demands of the community to do better.

Report for America 
In June, two bilingual local journalists joined the newsroom to cover North and West Long Beach as part of a previously announced partnership with Report For America, which places reporters in undercovered communities across the country. Their reporting has allowed us to cover neighborhoods beyond breaking news and crime, focusing on accountability journalism and stories that bring residents together. They have also allowed the Post to serve the local Spanish-speaking community with translated and ori ....

Among other high-profile state and local positions, opponent Tonia Reyes Uranga served for eight years on the Long Beach City Council. Her husband, Roberto Uranga, is now in his second council term in that same seat.
“I had multiple people saying that I was wasting my time and wasting my efforts,” Miller recalled in a recent interview with the Post. “It really only drove me even further and made me work harder.”
That approach to adversity and opportunity seems to be a defining theme in Miller’s life. He has tackled one challenge after another on his way to becoming, at age 36, the youngest member on the Long Beach school board, narrowly defeating Uranga, the early favorite. ....
