The number of confirmed global cases of the coronavirus-borne illness COVID-19 climbed above 91 million on Tuesday, and the U.S. case tally headed toward 23 million, as three Democratic lawmakers who were forced to shelter in place during last week’s attack on the Capitol tested positive for the virus.
Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman of New Jersey, Pramila Jayapal of Washington and Brad Schneider of Illinois said they believe their diagnoses are a direct result of being crowded into small rooms during the siege with colleagues who did not wear face masks, the Associated Press reported. Experts have worried that the lockdown at the Capitol would become a superspreader event. ....

Last week, a violent mob, mostly maskless and incited by the president, stormed the U.S. Capitol and wreaked havoc, forcing many lawmakers, staff, and members of the press to shelter in locked offices before moving to other secure locations. The unprecedented attack occurred amid a second crisis, taking place on the deadliest day of the pandemic so far. The House attending physician urged lawmakers to get tested for possible COVID-19 exposure during lockdown, and several members have already reported a positive diagnosis. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman tested positive for the coronavirus and said that she believes that some of her Republican colleagues who refused to wear face coverings as lawmakers gathered in a secure room during last week s breach of the U.S. Capitol building may be to blame.
Watson Coleman, a New Jersey Democrat who joined Congress in 2015, will turn 76 on Feb. 6.
Following the events of Wednesday, including sheltering with several colleagues who refused to wear masks, I decided to take a Covid test. I have tested positive, Watson Coleman wrote in a tweet on Monday.
After House lawmakers were ushered out of the House chamber when supporters of President Trump breached the Capitol last week, they were brought to an undisclosed, secure location for hours. ....
