CHANDIGARH: Former army officer and DIG prisons in Punjab, Captain Lakhminder Singh Jakhar has resigned stating that he wants to stand with farmers protesting against the farm laws and his resignation should be treated as premature retirement.
After serving in the army, Capt Jakhar had joined as a 1994-batch Punjab Police Service (PPS) officer and was to superannuate in August 2022. He was suspended in May after a preliminary inquiry on charges of graft for allegedly demanding monthly payments from jails officials. However, he had denied all allegations against him.
IG prisons Roop Kumar Arora said, “He was reinstated over a month ago. But the regular departmental inquiry is still pending against him.” ....

In a major reshuffle, Punjab government on Tuesday ordered transfer of 18 IPS officers and 11 PPS (Punjab Police Service) officers with immediate effect.
Officers who were transferred included a Director General of Police (DGP), 13 Inspector General of Police (IGP) and three Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).
DGP Hardeep Dhillon, who is currently holding the charge of Internal Vigilance Cell (IVC) and Human Rights, has been given the additional charge of Welfare, an official spokesman said here today. ....
