A local violence prevention program is hoping to spread their message through a group of artistic events and projects throughout Corbin and Williamsburg.
Community Green Dot is a violence prevention program that teaches people how to do proactive and reactive green dots, said Cecelia White, Victim’s Services Director for Cumberland River Behavioral Health.
“Proactive green dots are things that help to prevent violence before it occurs. Reactive green dots are things that everyone can do to intervene when a potentially dangerous situation is happening,” White said.
Cumberland River Victims Services is a program of Cumberland River Behavioral Health. It provides the Green Dot Program at both the high school and community level. ....

Child abuse, neglect cases 'very prevalent' in local communities

As a whole, the Commonwealth of Kentucky has led the entire nation with the highest rate of child abuse cases for the third straight year in 2020. According to data from Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, Department for Community Based Services, in 2018, Laurel, Knox, and Whitley counties were in the state’s top-20 counties when it comes to the number of children in reports to DCBS for suspected abuse and neglect. Knox County and Whitley County ranked 19th and 20th respectively, while Laurel County ranked fifth.
“We deal with these things several times a week,” Lt. Chris Edwards of the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office responded when asked about child abuse and neglect cases. “It’s very prevalent in our society and our local communities right now.” ....

Green Dot Program to display shirts designed by victims of sexual violence


JEFFERSON CITY - The Lincoln University Clothesline Project Exhibit will display a clothesline hung with shirts designed by survivors to represent their experiences. The Green Dot Program is organizing the event.
The event will be inside the Scruggs University Center on Monday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public. This is the first event at the university during National Crime Victims Rights Week.
Victoria McBride, Green Dot Program Coordinator, said she enjoys being able to give voices to people who have experienced trauma in their lives.
The Clothesline Project originated in the 90s in Massachusetts and they determined they wanted the opportunity for women and men and survivors of sexual violence to actually discuss their trauma and their victimization, McBride said. ....

Half of all adults in the U.S. have now received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

New student success coach hopes to inspire students through work with Student Affairs Diversity Initiatives

As UA Little Rock’s newest student success coach, Dominque “D.J.” Thomas is helping inspire the next generation of Trojans through his work with the Student Affairs Diversity Initiatives (SADI).
“I’ve always had a passion for working with college students,” Thomas said. “When I was an undergrad, I was part of a mentorship program known as the African American Male Initiative. I served as a mentee, and then I became a mentor while I was older. I love sharing my story to inspire and motivate and encourage those who come after me.”
Thomas mentors students in SADI, a student success and retention mentoring program that includes the African American Male Initiative, African American Female Initiative, and the Hispanic/Latinx Initiative. ....
