35 years ago, Katalin Hampel started her career as a fashion designer in a tiny shop in downtown Budapest. Beautiful folk attire was available even back then. Her business, however, could only effectively grow after Hungary’s regime change. Today, it has reached the point where it serves its customers in one of Budapest’s busiest “fashion streets.” Her clothes are popular among politicians, artists, aristocrats, and those who like sophisticated, unique clothes with Hungarian motifs. In the short film of the Friends of Hungary Foundation, Hampel says her Ars’ Poetica is that “old Hungarian costumes be brought to life in a fashionable form which can also be shown abroad.” The short film about Hampel is part of a video series that introduces ten remarkable Hungarians who have made a name for themselves abroad through talent and hard work. ....
A 50-meter-long underground tunnel for vehicles will soon be added to Budapest’s pricey Puskás Football Aréna, for “protected persons.” It was the National Security Committee’s president, Jobbik MP János Stummer who broke the news after it appeared the government tried to keep the new project secret. It was on Tuesday afternoon when Stummer came out publicly with the information, claiming that a private tunnel would be built exclusively for Prime Minister Viktor Orbán himself for HUF 2 billion (EUR 5.6 million). Right-wing opposition Jobbik’s MP revealed that he decided to do so after government politicians tried to classify the project through the Committee he heads, and which he opposed. ....
Public Survey On Easing Of Lockdown In Hungary To Be Launched On 15 February Hungary Matters The government is launching its latest National Consultation public survey concerning when to lift coronavirus restrictions during the week of Feb. 15, the Prime Minister’s chief of staff said on Friday. Gergely Gulyás told an online press conference that the second wave of the pandemic in Hungary was in a phase of stagnation, meaning any easing of restrictions would have to be “cautious and gradual”. If current trends continue, the restrictions may be eased in two steps, on March 1 and a month later, he said. ....
Coronavirus: Vaccination of Army Staff to Start Soon The vaccination of army staff will start soon, Defence Minister Tibor Benkő said on Wednesday. In line with the vaccination plan drawn up by the operative board responsible for handling the pandemic, the inoculation of armed forces and defence ministry employees will start once health-care staff and social workers have received the vaccine, Benkő said in a Facebook video. Service members serving in hospitals and army health-care employees working in the Honved hospital have already received the jab along with all other health-care workers, he said. The Hungarian government announced a few weeks ago to support giving priority access to coronavirus vaccines for Olympic athletes. Despite the controversy the issue has generated, their inoculation started on Friday morning.
