Trade versus climate on the edge of the EU

Trade versus climate on the edge of the EU
Written by David Perilli, Global Cement
09 June 2021
Little trickles of detail about the European Union’s (EU) proposed carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) started to emerge last week. The key bit of information that Bloomberg managed to squeeze out of their source was that a transition period with a simplified system is being considered from 2023 and then a full version could turn up in 2026. Cement importers, and those in selected other heavy industries, would be required to buy electronic emission certificates at prices corresponding to those in the EU emissions trading scheme (ETS). Other titbits include: that the prices will be set on a weekly basis based on the average carbon permit price within the EU that week; a default value will be devised for importers who can’t back up their emissions data; and imports from a country with its own carbon pricing schem ....

MONETA shareholders urged to vote against Air Bank deal

By Reuters Staff
3 Min Read
PRAGUE (Reuters) -Two investor advisory firms have recommended MONETA Money Bank shareholders vote against a plan to buy investment group PPF’s Czech and Slovak lending assets, saying the price may be too high.

The tie up is the groups’ second attempt in two years to create a Czech banking giant to compete with larger rivals.
If approved, the deal would give PPF majority control in MONETA, the country’s sixth largest bank. ....

Swiss to vote on whether to become first European nation to ban synthetic pesticides

By John Revill ZURICH (Reuters) - Switzerland could become the first European country to ban artificial pesticides in a June 13 referendum which backers of the initiative hope will trigger similar prohibitions elsewhere. Globally, only Bhutan has a complete ban on synthetic pesticides, according to supporters aiming to outlaw the use of products made by agro-chemical giants such as Switzerland s Syngenta and Germany s Bayer and BASF. Supporters of the ban say the artificial products cause serious health problems and reduce biodiversity. Manufacturers say their pesticides are rigorously tested and regulated, can be used safely and crop yields would slump without them. Another initiative to be voted on the same day aims to improve the quality of Switzerland s drinking water and food by stopping direct subsidies to farmers who use artificial pesticides and antibiotics in livestock. Switzerland has been starkly divided by an unusually bitter debate over the initiatives and the votes look s ....
