DAYTONA BEACH Less than a decade ago, the local economy here was still in the grips of the Great Recession with real estate development activity practically at a standstill. New development was largely viewed as a sign of hope and optimism. Not anymore. Today, a flurry of new home construction, apartment projects and commercial development throughout Volusia County has some citizens and elected officials alarmed that area is quickly becoming over-developed. Volusia County Chair Jeff Brower is one of them. The flood gates have come open, said Brower while standing on a grassy field along LPGA Boulevard that is set to become the site of a retail center called Tymber Creek Village. The pendulum has swung the other way. Now, it s at the point where people daily are telling me Stop all growth. We can t stop all growth, but what we could do is try to slow things down. It s like we ve been on a sprint. ....
DAYTONA BEACH A global shortage of computer chips is resulting in record low inventories of new cars and trucks at auto dealerships throughout the country, including here in the Volusia-Flagler area. Glenn Ritchey Sr., president and CEO of Jon Hall Chevrolet in Daytona Beach, said his dealership currently has barely over 200 new cars and trucks on site at a time of year when he would normally have more than four times that number. It s the lowest inventory of new vehicles that we ve had in the 50 years I ve been with Chevrolet, the veteran auto dealer said. Ritchey said the same is true of his other Daytona Beach dealerships: Ritchey Cadillac Buick GMC, Daytona Hyundai and Subaru of Daytona. ....
During a Zoom hearing on Wednesday, Circuit Judge Mary Jolley denied Fryer’s Towing company’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit filed. No trial date has been set yet. “I do find that there is a genuine issue of material fact: Specifically as to the sale and whether it truly was public and as to whether the defendants acted in good faith,” Jolley said. The accusations in the lawsuit against Fryer’s include unjust enrichment, deceptive and unfair trade practices, and fraudulent concealment. Tesla’s attorney, Justin Niznik, said during the Zoom hearing that Fryer’s goal had been to get the car from the start. ....
