National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has decried the rate at which Uganda is losing forest cover and blamed it on subsistence farming.
The Authority’s executive director, Dr Tom Okurut said agriculture land was increasing while forest land was decreasing, something he argues, threatens the ecosystem yet biodiversity is supposed to be an insurance policy of nature.
Agriculture land is increasing as forest land is decreasing and posing a threat to the ecosystem, he said during the signing of an MOU between NEMA, National Forestry Authority (NFA) and the Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industries and Fisheries (MAAIF) for production of Biodiversity hot spots, land use and ecosystem maps to inform decision making process in Agriculture sector on Friday. ....

The officials say the developers have acquired land illegally, and those with genuine land titles have encroached on buffer zones. But this is not a problem unique to Entebbe. The same practice has been repeated in buffer zones around lakes, rivers or wetlands countrywide. ....

Titanium mining firm seeks four-year licence extension

“In a move to assess the possibility of extending the life of mine even further, Base, in 2018, decided to re-evaluate the potential of the ‘North Dune’ mineral deposit, which is located immediately to the north-east of the Kwale operation’s offices and plant. The North Dune is a low-grade 582 hactare resource that has the clear potential to be economic,” said the company in the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) it has filed with Nema.
“The proposed project of mining in the North Dune commencing in early 2024, increase the life of mine by a further four to 4.5 years.”
The company recently got a one-year extension on the life of the mine after the Mining ministry varied its current licence, allowing it to mine in what is referred to as the South Dune. ....

Had everything gone according to plan, Kenya would be preparing to start exporting its first consignment of commercially produced oil by the end of this year.
However, this has since changed and the optimism with which 2021 was labelled as the possible date for Kenya’s first oil payday has been moved to 2022, then 2023 and now 2024.
As recently as 2018, British exploration firm Tullow Oil had targeted a “Final Investment Decision (FID) for 2019 and First Oil for 2021/22.”
But the company has gone mute on when it expects to start commercial exportation of Kenyan oil, at least going by its just-published annual report. ....
