Salute to Sitawa: ‘That Brotha still stands strong, unbroken!’

This was Bay View Editor Nube Brown’s first and only visit with revered Elder Sitawa Nantambu Jamaa. Nube and Sitawa sat for hours strategizing the Free Sitawa campaign – a dream Marie, his sister, helped inspire. True to form, Sitawa agreed to be the spearhead freeing the way for all the other Elder Hunger Strikers to come home. Sitawa represents a core group of men who would commit to Hunger Strike to their death to end the torture by CDCr of themselves, the Elders and the youth coming after them. Sitawa survived 32 years in Pelican Bay’s torture chambers, meant to break him but didn’t, yet still remains unfree in a prison medical facility after suffering a stroke less than a week after this photo.
