CAMPAIGNERS have backed plans which could see the Scottish Parliament bypass Westminster to rid Scotland of nuclear weapons currently stockpiled on the Clyde. The Scottish Greens announced today that their manifesto for May’s elections will include proposals to force Westminster to remove nuclear submarines and weapons from Faslane naval base. The party policy would amend the Marine Scotland Act under Holyrood’s devolved powers to make it impossible for the navy to operate Trident from Faslane, banning “the movement of nuclear weapons through Scottish waters.” The announcement comes after the Tories revealed their intention to increase the upper limit on Britain’s nuclear warhead stockpile. ....
