Naugatuck CT Mayor releases statement condemning racist comments allegedly made by daughter of police chief on social media


A joint statement from the Mayor and other town officials called the comments disgusting and totally inappropriate.

NAUGATUCK, Conn A joint statement was released by Naugatuck Mayor N. Warren Hess, Police Commission Chairman Ralph Roper Jr., and Deputy Chief of Police C.Colin McAllister, condemning racist comments seen on social media allegedly made by the daughter of the Police Chief Steven Hunt. 
The statement said the comments made were disgusting and totally inappropriate, adding Naugatuck and the Police Department condemn any form of racism or bigotry. 
Town officials said information is being gathered internally and are working on bringing in help from the outside to conduct an independent investigation. The Board of Education is also conducting its own investigation.  ....

Investigations launched into racist social media posts attributed to police chief s daughter

NAUGATUCK Multiple investigations are ongoing after racial comments made by Police Chief Steven Hunt’s daughter emerged on social media, prompting condemnations from officials and an apology from the chief and his wife.
Saturday night, Hunt and his wife, Naugatuck High School Vice Principal Johnna Minicucci Hunt, said in a statement that the posts were made by their daughter two years ago when she was 13 years old.
“We cannot soothe or erase the pain caused by the words and images seen by many. On behalf of our family, we sincerely apologize to all those who were hurt by this,” the Hunts’ statement read. “We are left, however, as parents of a scared, regretful child who has and will continue to suffer the consequences of her poor and inexcusable ....

Advocates, officials call for improvements to neglected dam

SEYMOUR It has been centuries since the Naugatuck River had runs of alewife, shad, striped bass or other fish that move from fresh water to the ocean and back again.
A series of dams dating back to the 1700s helped fuel the Naugatuck Valley’s industrial might but prevented spawning runs of fish. The area’s industrial legacy also led to heavy pollution. Older locals recall the river running different colors depending on what the manufacturing mills were producing that day.
With several dams removed and environmental regulations leading to cleaner waters, the scene is set for an environmental comeback, advocates say, and shad, striped bass, salmon, alewives and other fish are knocking at the door. ....
