Former Nova Scotia premier Donald Cameron remembered as man 'ahead of his time'

HALIFAX – Raised on a farm in Nova Scotia’s Pictou County, Donald Cameron’s rural roots were a source of pride for a man who in 1991 would become the province’s 22nd premier and an advocate for fairness and social justice.
An avowed deficit-fighter who pledged to rid the province of patronage, Cameron died Monday at the age of 74. A cause of death was not disclosed.
“He was ahead of his time,” former prime minister Brian Mulroney said in an interview Monday. “He took decisive action in areas that cemented Nova Scotia’s reputation as a social leader among Canadian provinces.” ....

Northern Pulp poised to submit revised plan for effluent treatment facility

Northern Pulp intends to submit revised plans within a month for an effluent treatment facility at its mothballed paper mill in Nova Scotia s Pictou County, according to an affidavit filed this week in a B.C. court.
The affidavit said the company   which is seeking protection from creditors intends to share key details of the project with certain stakeholders by the end of April.
Bruce Chapman, the mill s general manager, said Northern Pulp anticipates submitting a project description for an environmental assessment by May 13. ....

The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the frustration rural Canadians face when their sluggish internet speeds prevent them from working remotely from home.
But Joe Hickey, the founder, president and CEO of Rock Networks, says  a community-owned fibre internet network could deliver the same high speeds to rural residents that urbanites take for granted.

In a Zoom presentation at council’s February meeting, Hickey said Rock Networks had partnered with the municipality of Huron Shores to create a network called Huron and Manitoulin Community Owned Fibre Internet or H&M COFI, which would serve 29 communities and 12 First Nations between Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury. ....
