"I Lost My Story": How Ventura County Psychologist Who Lost Own Home In Wildfire Is Using The Experience To Help Others

Dr. Noelle Nelson s home was burned down in the Woolsey wildfire.
A Ventura County based psychologist who lost her home to the Woolsey Fire in November 2017, has now written a book to help others who have suffered a similar loss.
Losing everything in a wildfire or a natural disaster is devastating, as Camarillo-based psychologist Dr. Noelle Nelson knows first hand.
She lost her beloved home in the Woolsey wildfire, in November 2018.
Total destruction. Everything gone. I d just turned 71, so you re looking at 70 years of life [gone], Dr. Nelson told KCLU.
The Woolsey wildfire raged through nearly 100,000 acres in Ventura and Los Angeles counties. She was one of 300,000 people evacuated from the path of the fire. ....

Iowa schools hiring help for student learning loss amid COVID pandemic


Both/and strategies in some districts
The Iowa City Community School District has been looking at different strategies to recover learning loss including holding summer school and hiring more classroom teachers for the 2021-22 school year to reduce class sizes. 
The district is also planning to hire about 34 academic support teachers, essentially interventionists, to work with elementary, middle and high school students, said Diane Schumacher, Iowa City schools executive director of teaching and learning. The total cost is estimated to be about $3 million. The district plans to use federal funds to cover the cost for the next two years. 
In elementary classes, the academic support teachers would be able to do intervention in the classroom, Schumacher said.  ....

Dear Annie: I am 74 years old. Back in my 40s, I tried learning an up-and-coming new skill: how to use a computer. Well, my attempts were fruitless. I could never figure it out. My wife tried teaching me, but I just couldn’t get the hang of it. Later, my boss appointed a staff member (a computer “geek”) to give me lessons. After weeks of trying with daily one-on-one instruction, he gave up trying to teach me. For me, it was nothing but frustration.
I seem to be an otherwise intelligent person. Fifty-three years ago, I even graduated college with honors. I did well with networking and keeping up with the latest news, until computers became ubiquitous. ....
