UMIL MANILA – With the death of yet another political prisoner, human rights group KAPATID called on Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo’s intervention to prevent more deaths, and to order an inspection of all prison facilities including quarantine centers. KAPATID issued the call hours after peasant leader Joseph Canlas died, the fourth political prisoner to pass away during the pandemic. Canlas, chairperson of Alyansa ng Magbubukid sa Gitnang Luson was arrested on March 30 and charged with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. ....

In her letter addressed to CHR Commissioner Karen Gomez-Dumpit, Karapatan Secretary General Cristina Palabay appealed on behalf of Elizabeth Estilon, 41, and Enriqueta Guelas, 62, who were arrested on Dec. 24, 2020 following a raid in barangay Lalod, Bulusan, Sorsogon by members from 31st and 22nd Infantry Battalions of the Philippine Army. Both were charged with violation of the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 and illegal possession of firearms and explosives. ....

Makabayan bloc seeks probe into death of Baby Carlen in Negros separated from detained mom Published February 24, 2021 9:57am A resolution was filed at the House of Representatives which seeks investigation on the death of an infant who was separated from her detained mother in Negros Oriental. Members of the Makabayan bloc filed House Resolution 1600 urging the chamber, through the Committee on Human Rights, to look into the incident in aid of legislation. The resolution said that on February 14, one-month-old baby Carlen, child of political prisoner Nona Espinosa, died of an infection of the lungs and blood while being separated from her mother. ....
