Police: Mother, 24, dies in one-car crash in St. Albans
Chelsey Roy of St. Albans is believed to have died on impact, according to police. Her 3-year-old son, who was in the back seat, was taken to Northern Light Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield, where he was treated for injuries not considered life-threatening.

Belfast Area High School students present ideas, earn awards at 75th Maine State Science Fair

BELFAST  Belfast Area High School students joined 200 fellow students and competitors from around the state for the 75th Maine State Science Fair, with a special emphasis on the ocean’s ecology and its relation to rising temperatures.
 
Chelsea Gaiero, Jonah Lovejoy, and Grace Hall participated in the April 3 virtual fair, which was organized by The Jackson Laboratory  and the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance.
 
The fair comprised 157 students representing 23 schools in eight Maine counties tuned in to present virtual research or engineering projects to a panel of judges and attend events. High school students from across the state competed for prestigious state titles and over $1 million in scholarships and awards. ....

A Deering High School senior who took top honors at the 2021 Maine State Science Fair for her research on an inexpensive way to remove arsenic from drinking water systems won a top national scholarship Thursday.

Linh Nguyen was the First Place Grand Award winner at the science fair, which took place virtually last Saturday. On Thursday, she learned she was named a Cooke College Scholar, one of only 61 students honored nationwide by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation and the only one from Maine. ....

Newport-based schools increasing in-person learning, Waterville schools report COVID-19 case
Middle and high school students in Regional School Unit 19 will begin in-person learning four days per week beginning in the next two weeks.

Newport-based Regional School Unit 19 announced Monday that it will welcome back middle and high school students for increased in-person learning later this month.
In a letter to the community, RSU 19 Superintendent Michael Hammer outlined the plan to bring middle and high school students back to four days per week of in-person learning.
“We are planning to have the students return to in-person learning four days a week in the middle/high school,” Hammer wrote. “Based on the responses to our survey, we believe that we can bring those students, who indicated the desire, back safely for a pilot period.” ....
