Unrest in Mozambique Displaces Thousands
07/15/2021 Nigeria (International Christian Concern) – Human rights groups and relief organization are raising the alarm over an escalating security situation in east Africa’s Mozambique. The violence is driven by a terrorist group calling itself Al-Shabab. It seems to be loosely affiliated with Islamic State, though the connection is somewhat tenuous.
As the violence spreads, thousands are fleeing including across the border to Tanzania. Boris Cheshirkov, spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), highlighted their dire situation in a statement earlier this year.
“UNHCR is alarmed at reports that Mozambicans have been refouled, forcibly returned, and prevented from seeking asylum,” he said referencing a foundational concept of international law that disallows the practice of endangering refugees by sending them back to their home country.
At Least 20 Nigerians Killed in Terror Attack
07/09/2021 Nigeria (International Christian Concern) – On July 7th Boko Haram, a terrorist group in Africa, attacked communities in Adamawa State, Nigeria, killing no fewer than 20 people.
Daily Sun reported that the suspected terrorists fired gunshots in Dabna to announce their arrival.
“Residents scampered for safety as sporadic gunshots were heard in different parts of the community,” Adamu Isa, a survivor of the attack and a resident of Hong, told the Daily Sun.
Yesterday, President Muhammadu Buhari confirmed the attack and expressed his grief towards the innocent lives that were taken.
“This level of savagery, inhumanity and reckless disregard for the sanctity of life cannot go unpunished,’’ said Buhari. “
Priest Killed, Another Kidnapped in Nigeria
05/26/2021 Nigeria (International Christian Concern) – According to Morning Star News, suspected jihadist Fulani herdsmen invaded a Roman Catholic Church in Malumfashi, Katsina state on Friday, killing one priest and kidnapping another.
Church members confirmed the attack and added that about 15 assailants entered parish premises at around 1:30am
.
“This sad event took place at the early hours of today, Friday, May 21, 2021,” said Reverand Cornelius Tagwai, chancellor of Sokoto Diocese
, “The late Father Bello was kidnapped along with Father Joseph Keke, the most senior priest of Sokoto Diocese, but his [Bello’s] lifeless body was later found abandoned behind the [Catechetical Training School]. The whereabouts of Father Keke is not yet known.”
