Lagos Chapter of Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association (GCUOBA), yesterday, commiserated with the family of the late Rear Admiral Joe Aikhomu (rtd), who died recently at 65.
A statement signed by its President, Sam Omatseye, disclosed that until his death, Aikhomu was an active member of the Lagos branch of GCUOBA.

Navy says allegation of aiding oil theft speculative, false


[FILES] Crude Oil theftThe Nigeria Navy (NN) has dispelled rumours that its officers and ratings aid and abet crude oil theft and invasion of herders.
In a statement by naval image-maker, Suleman Dahun, the navy insisted that it was highly committed to zero tolerance to economic sabotage and indiscipline among officers and rank-and-file in their bid to secure Nigeria’s waters.

According to him, their attention was drawn to a report in some newspapers captioned ‘How Nigerian Navy Aids Crude Oil Theft, Herders’ Invasion’, he said not only is the report largely speculative, lacking in facts and substance and one-sided, there was an attempt to substantiate and legitimize the allegations by quoting an unnamed official of one Domestic Refineries Owners Association of Nigeria, who made grave allegations of complicity against the Nigerian Navy. ....

West African pirates and need for NATO intervention

There is a need for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and some governments at the highest level to be more engaged in finding a long-term solution to the crisis. The international community should remain committed in the efforts of taking concrete actions towards protecting the vessels and crew operating in the Gulf of Guinea. We cannot continue to allow crews to be taken hostage, a situation which is simply unacceptable. The Gulf of Guinea comprises 20 countries. Twenty thousand ships pass through the Gulf of Guinea a year. One hundred and thirty sailors were kidnapped in the Gulf of Guinea in 2020. Ninety-five per cent of global piracy occurred in the Gulf of Guinea in 2020. Piracy threat grows off the coast of West Africa. There is a need for another Operation Ocean Shield which was NATO’s counter piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden and off the Horn of Africa.
