By Udora Orizu Hunters Group of Nigeria (HGN) yesterday stormed the National Assembly complex in Abuja to seek the opportunity and recognition under the law to assist the federal government in tackling the ravaging insecurity in the land. The Commandant of the Akwa Ibom State Command of the organisation, John Essien, who spoke with journalists, said they specifically needed the backing of the law to compliment the efforts of the relevant security agencies in apprehending bandits and the insurgents terrorising the country. He also disclosed that they were at the National Assembly for a public hearing on a bill for an Act to establish the Nigerian Hunters Council of Nigeria. ....
Punch Newspapers Sections Published 18 May 2021 The Hunters Group of Nigeria on Tuesday, pleaded with members of the Senate to pass the bill seeking to grant it a legal backing. The hunters said doing so would officially empower them to assist the Federal Government to tackle insecurity. The Commandant of the group in Akwa Ibom State, John Essien, stated this when the HGN defended the bill on the group’s establishment before the Senate Committee on Interior. The group said it could compliment the efforts of the conventional security agencies in apprehending bandits and the insurgents terrorising the country. Another bill seeking to establish the Nigerian Hunters Council of Nigeria also scaled second reading on the floor during plenary on Tuesday. The Peace Corps bill was sponsored by Senator Ali Ndume while that of NHCN was sponsored by Senator Biodun Olujimi. Leading debate on his own bill, Ndume said, “the core mandate being sought by the Nigerian Peace Corps (Establishment) Bill is to Develop, Empower, and Provide Gainful Employment for the youth to facilitate Peace, Volunteerism, Community Services, Neighbourhood Watch, Nation-Building.” ....
