Review: 'Tell Them We Were Here' shines a light on eight Bay Area artists

The worldview of the new documentary “Tell Them We Were Here,” which profiles eight current Bay Area artists whose work over the decades has not only made an impact but also helped inform the Bay Area’s artistic identity, is expressed by an early voice-over in the film: “Artists in the Bay Area are more devoted to a ‘life’ in arts rather than a ‘career’ in arts.”
The inventive and informative film by artist and Gallery 16 founder Griff Williams and filmmaker Keelan Williams made its world premiere in the virtual cinema of the Berkeley Art Museum’s Pacific Film Archive on Friday, May 7. It also features local curators from BAMPFA, Oakland Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art as well as other observers and artists such as filmmaker ....

The Tribeca Film Festival has added to its 2021 lineup by announcing its first-ever official podcast selections.
Along with world premieres of fiction and non-fiction podcast series, the Tribeca Podcasts lineup includes special events with some of the most prominent creators in the field, including live recordings, discussions, and more. Marquee events include Jad Abumrad discussing his work on

New York’s Tribeca Festival (formerly the Tribeca Film Festival) will feature podcasting in its annual celebration on June 20. It is the first time podcasts are  included in the agenda, which will also feature films, TV, and gaming.

The San Quentin Project collects a largely unseen visual record of daily life inside one of America’s oldest and largest prisons, demonstrating how this archive of the state is now being used to teach visual literacy and process the experience of incarceration. 
In 2011, Nigel Poor artist, educator, and co-creator of the acclaimed podcast Ear Hustle began teaching a history of photography class through the Prison University Project at San Quentin State Prison. Neither books nor cameras were allowed into the facility, so an unorthodox course with a range of inventive mapping exercises ensued: students crafted “verbal photographs” of memories for which they had no visual documentation, and annotated iconic images from different artists. SAN FRANCISCO - An Israeli businessman who operates San Francisco s only kosher bakery has earned another moniker for his shop because of the formerly incarcerated people he now employs.
The nickname for Issac Yosef s Frena Bakery is the Lifer Bakery.  
Carlos Flores, who served 23 years in prison on a murder charge, revealed that Yosef hired him when he was released from prison, along with two dozen others like him over the years, in an interview first aired by the San Quentin-based podcast, Ear Hustle.  ....
