SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) European captain Padraig Harrington made it clear on the first night together at the Ryder Cup that his players have a place in history, one by one. For this team, it starts with Lee Westwood at No. ....
Better than most? One putt on the 17th that actually was By DOUG FERGUSONMarch 9, 2021 GMT PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (AP) The moment stands out as among the most famous at The Players Championship. Twenty years ago this week, Tiger Woods made a 60-foot birdie putt from the back of the island green on the par-3 17th to a front pin in the third round. Woods went on to win on Monday, and then two weeks later won the Masters to hold all four majors at the same time. The video, replayed endlessly in the weeks leading up to the tournament, features NBC analyst Gary Koch saying, “Better than most,” his voice rising each of the three times he uttered the phrase until the ball disappeared in the cup. ....
In This Article It is a measure of how odd THE PLAYERS Championship was last year that while no one can forget it, almost no one remembers any golf. For the record, Hideki Matsuyama shot 63 to lead after an opening round that, like the tournament itself, was never completed. Tense, real-time decision-making; Rubik’s Cube-level communication and coordination between local, state and federal agencies; a 144-way tie for first – whatever else it was, the 2020 PLAYERS was sui generis. It was also a whole lot of tacos and margaritas that went unsold. “It was second time in March for us,” says Don Nicol, owner of Taco Lu restaurant, which sets up behind the 12th green for Tacos on Twelve. “The year before had been a little disappointing, the weekend weather was chilly after being beautiful Tuesday through Friday. It was a dip in business. ....
Remembering the record-setting playoff at rainy Riviera In This Article It remains the largest playoff to end a 72-hole PGA TOUR event, another bit of history created at the iconic Riviera Country Club. There also was a six-man playoff at the 1994 Byron Nelson but that tournament was just two rounds because of persistent rain. Seven years later, six men braved the elements to decide a champion at Riviera in the tournament now known as the Genesis Invitational. It rained so hard that a delay never seemed far away. The 18th hole, reachable with short-irons earlier in the week, now required players to use fairway woods for their approach shots. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of this unique finish, PGATOUR.COM caught up with some of the participants to hear their recollections. ....
The PGA of America has severed ties with outgoing US President Donald Trump after its membership voted to move the 2022 PGA Championship from its planned host course of Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey. The new venue will be announced shortly. It was a bold decision as years of planning had already gone into the event and it is sure to lead to a legal challenge from Trump and his organisation. Bedminster was named as host in 2012 and has spent considerable time and money to prepare for one of golf’s most prestigious titles. But after Trump’s role in last week’s insurrection and the subsequent storming of the Capitol by a mob that resulted in death and destruction, many former Trump supporters are scurrying for cover. The president is also facing possible charges. ....
